About the event
Fundamentals of Public Speaking is a course designed to teach students basic public speaking skills. It helps students develop an understanding of the principles of oral communication. Students will develop, improve, and gain confidence in basic delivery skills Additional drills, games, and exercises will help students build confidence while creating a rapport with an audience. Students will deliver recitations and present more than a dozen speeches throughout the course. Emphasis will be given to…
• Voice – enunciation, articulation, cadence, pitch and diction
• Body – posture, poise, use of gestures, facial expression, and eye contact.
• Style & Delivery – spontaneous speeches and conversational practicum
• Platform speeches – speaking one’s own words
• Interpretive speeches – bringing someone else’s words to life
• Written evaluation and oral review of presentations

Instructor
Elia Ching is a debater, writer, and researcher from the San Francisco Bay Area. As a homeschool graduate, Elia has had a unique self-directed education that allowed him the freedom to dive deep into subjects that he is interested in. In addition to taking college classes since middle school, he has conducted research in International Relations, Economics, and Public Policy under professors from Dartmouth, Carleton, New York University, UC Santa Barbara, University of Connecticut and Foothill College. He is an accomplished speech and debater at the national level, including being a semifinalist at Stanford Invitational Parliamentary Open. He is currently the coach of Valley Christian School and Calvary Christian School speech and debate teams and researcher at a think tank.
Elia hopes to inspire young students with his knowledge, skills and passion. He believes that the ability for youth to think, speak, and analyze the world around them is the most important skill they can have.
